This Everoak helmet with the addition of temple protection was worn by Mike Hawthorn in 1957 and for his World Championship the following year , and was followed by the full jet shape Racemaster helmet worn by Jack Brabham in 1959 and 1960 .
Bill worked as a helmet moulder after serving an apprenticeship at BIP Chemicles in Birmingham
and went on to study tailoring textiles and factory management at the London College of Fashion and has a unique experience of over 50 years in the manufacture of protective headwear.
The Classic helmet epitomises the golden age of Motor Racing from Earl Howe, Goldie Gardner
and Sammy Davies in the 1930's to Fangio, Moss, Hawthorn and Collins in the 50's and 60's.
The original helmets based on a Polo cap shape replaced the cloth or chamois leather helmet favoured by Nuvolari and Caracciola. Hand made in London by Bill Vero who's family company established in 1878 manufactured flying helmets for the RFC in 1914 and manufactured racing helmets under the Everoak brand name and for the leading suppliers including Aviakit, Herbert Johnsons and Les Leston.
The Classic helmet elegantly illustrates the emerging technology of glass-fibre moulding combined with the traditional materials of hand cut leather and linen with cotton webb concussion tapes and cork shcok absorbing padding inspired by the neurosurgeon Professor Hugh Cairns in 1941.
